Press Release on the IPCM Second General Assembly

The Independent Press Council Myanmar (IPCM) held its Second General Assembly on 17 and 18 January 2026. More than 100 participants attended the assembly, including IPCM members, partner media organizations, Myanmar media networks, and representatives from relevant organizations.

During the two-day Assembly, participants elected members of the Executive Committee who will serve for the upcoming term. According to the election results, a total of fourteen (14) members were elected, comprising nine (9) representatives from media organizations, three (3) freelance journalist representatives, and two (2) media professionals. Following the election, the Executive Committee members selected the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer from among themselves.

The General Assembly also reviewed and presented IPCM’s activity reports covering the two-year period of 2024 and 2025. Participants discussed and approved a revised constitution, and held discussions on policies concerning ethnic language media, as well as measures for the prevention of and protection against sexual harassment in its various forms within the media workplace.

In addition, the Assembly discussed the role of independent media beyond 2025, including the future of freedom of expression in Myanmar, the safety and security of journalists, and the survival and long-term sustainability of independent media.

Following the successful convening of the Assembly, representatives of independent Myanmar media attending the Second General Assembly of IPCM issued the following calls and demands:

• The immediate and unconditional release of twenty-seven (27) journalists currently detained in prisons across Myanmar

• An immediate end to the targeted arrests, torture, and imprisonment of journalists

• Respect for and recognition of journalists’ rights to safely gather information and report freely, including in areas affected by armed conflict

• A call on relevant authorities to prioritize and ensure the safety and protection of journalists

• A call on international organizations to continue supporting the survival and long-term sustainability of independent Myanmar media.
